Project scheduling provides critical information to assist with the management of a project.

  • It enables clear communication of the tasks being done on the project – the What.
  • It shows How the tasks will be performed – some in parallel and some in series.
  • Who is performing the tasks can be incorporated as a part of the project scheduling function.
  • And the schedule identifies When each of the tasks should be taking place.

A well built, dynamic schedule enables us to perform analysis to determine how the project is progressing with respect to its original plan, and provides visibility of potential future problems. This allows us to respond to prevent the problems from occurring; or, if they are not preventable, to plan alternatives should the problems emerge.

We can also use our schedule to maintain a record of what actually occurred in the project so that we can use this information when planning future projects.
