Most projects are divided into phases. Project phases are collections of logically related project activities that culminate in the completion of one or more deliverables.

Typically, at the end of each phase, deliverables are reviewed to determine if they are correct and complete. This may also be a decision point as to whether the project should go forward. These decision points are sometimes called Gates, Stage Gates, or Phase Gates.

Project phases are typically industry specific and will vary across organizations. These project phases make up the Project life cycle. Some examples of phases are: planning, analysis, requirements definition, design, development, testing, and implementation.
